Power House Orchestrations was established by Jerry Sheppard in 1995 to publish Big Band Jazz charts written for an area Youth Jazz Orchestra. These formed the basis of the Stateside Collection Series.
Many titles then available of jazz standards included brass ranges beyond the ability of student jazz musicians and chord symbols were often only provided for soloists. The Stateside Collection charts include written out suggested solos, as well as chord symbols, at about Associated Board Grade 5 standard.
We want to encourage young musicians to develop their own ideas within a big band framework. We have found that players will at least ‘have a go’ at creating their own solos if they have some initial ideas to follow – there is nothing more daunting for a young and probably classically trained musician to be suddenly faced with 32 bars of just chord symbols! Many then give up trying.
Trumpet Ranges are shown against each title on this site.
Trombone Ranges. The Stateside series, as well as all titles up to Intermediate Level, have 1st Trombone no higher than G above the stave.
Scores. Many of the published jazz charts in the past only included lead sheets so that valuable rehearsal time was often wasted. All of our publications have fully printed scores.
Big Band Jazz, Rock and Latin instrumental and vocal titles covering the entire ability range from easy to advanced professional levels are now available on this site.
Small Band Titles. We have small band charts for 4 front line, 4 rhythm and vocal. These continue with our policy of keeping brass ranges within a sensible level.
