  • AH-LEU CHA

Supersax was a Charlie Parker tribute band formed by Med Flory and Buddy Clark that debuted in 1972. Their music consisted of harmonized arrangements of Charlie Parkers music played by a saxophone section (2 altos, 2 tenors, and a baritone), rhythm section, and frequently a brass instrument (trombone or trumpet). Notable brass soloists that recorded with the group included Conte Candoli (trumpet), Frank Rosolino (trombone) and Carl Fontana (trombone). Here is Med Flory's arrangement of Ah-Leu-Cha as recorded by Supersax. Charlie Parker's original solo was transcribed in full by Med Flory and then harmonized to be played by a standard big band sax section (2 altos, 2 tenors and 1 baritone). This is a very difficult arrangement but well worth the workout. Med said that it took his band nearly a year to rehearse in advance of recording each of the Supersax records. Well, here's your chance to put your sax section to the test! Enjoy the workout! Learn More

  • Ain't That Right

Elegantly transcribed by Jon Harpin from Basie's 1962 Verve album "On My Way and Shoutin' Again", this Neal Hefti chart has a real gospel feel to it, and swings like crazy from start to finish. The opening chorus is from the reeds, with Tenor 1 taking the lead line. The band closes out the melodic statement and Trumpet 2 picks up the solo work, backed by unison reeds. Being a Basie chart, it wouldn't be complete without a big shout chorus and this chart has two of them before things calm down by a re-statement of the intro and sax soli, all finished off with some excellent dynamic contrast from the band, a quick sax lick and final chords. There are no sax doubles. We would like to acknowledge Mr Paul Hefti for his kind assistance which has allowed us to bring this chart to you. Learn More

  • AIR MAIL SPECIAL

Air Mail Special was originally titled Good Enough To Keep, which was recording session-speak for "This may not be the performance that we want to release to the public, but let"s hold on to it just in case." Many of these alternate performances were eventually released to the public, in many cases to the consternation of the musicians themselves, who didn't enjoy some of their lesser efforts being heard. Of course, some alternate performances are better than the ones that were released, only held back because of a single mistake. It was Mundy who arranged this for the Goodman band, and he is even cut in on composer credit. This arrangement, like all of Goodman's arrangements, was meant to be danced to, so it really should not be played too fast. Learn More
